The aim of EAIA is to help distributors simplify, streamline and automate many aspects of running a business so they can save time, better serve customers and get paid faster. The size is also dictated by the sticking board and stock. Having brought many an old plane back to life, it was a nice presentation. I am a big fan of his work, research and writing. Inside the visitor center is a nice new and working kiln. This past weekend Alyssa and I attended our first EAIA annual meeting which was held in Hyannis on Cape Cod.
It was probably 10+ years since my wife and I last rode a carousel — but even as an adult it was still a lot of fun. The weather was perfect and we got to explore some new museums. Folks try and stump the other tool enthusiasts with their recent finds — or figure out what that oddball tool your late relative left you in his will was actually used for. Highlights will include visiting the Heinz Center, Old Economy Village, the Fort Pitt Museum along with the usual EAIA events of the tool swap, tool auction, whatsits? I got a nice pair of old Disston hand saws and a 4′ carriage maker’s boxwood folding rule which I can put to good use. The livestock on the plantation were quite used to humans and friendly; no animatronic squirrels like at Williamsburg (*wink* to my friends at CW with that old joke). A highlight of the event for me was finally getting to meet Chris Schwarz in person. It offers a new more modern feel and is built on the WordPress platform. After an orientation to the tools and classroom setup I demonstrated how to evaluate a molding plane and how to tune up an iron. This year hand drills and Stanley 45s and 55s seemed to be plentiful. At the 2018 Early American Industries Association annual meeting (held this year in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania), one of the things I most enjoyed (beyond meeting everyone, of course!) Beyond all the events I also got some shiny new toys: I got the carriage maker’s rule and old hand saws at the Great Planes auction and will put them to good use in the shop. Beyond my own tool shopping its good to see old friends and familiar faces at the show. The plans below could be scaled up or down to fit whatever size frame you desire. We started out our day with the introductory/orientation film and then an interesting talk by Peter Follansbee who is an expert on 17th century woodworking and quite the interesting character.

After that program we were free to explore the plantation and/or take part in some other behind the scenes tours. We also took part in a private tour event where one of the curators explained how the plantation uses experimental archaeology and character interpretation to explore the mindset and problems of the time period and also to try and answer some of the questions we have about the times given the incomplete records that survive. There was a nice selection of traditional tools, books and items folks donated and/or made for the auction. It was also interesting to see some of Chris’ journey from earlier power tool oriented projects to later more traditional projects that focused on traditional joinery and hand tools. In an antique shop on the Cape I found a nice 1950s set of 4 Audel’s books on masonry.

AIA will transition its remaining distributors onto the platform in 2020. Following a trial launch and beta testing, AIA has migrated 95 distributors to the new platform, resulting in $65 million in sales processed through EAIA and over 50,000 purchase orders produced and sent from EAIA. We had great weather all weekend. I also found some nice old tool catalogs including a 1938 Starrett Catalog, a reprint of an 1883 Atha Tool Company Catalog, and a book from the 1950s on old Virginia furniture with great shop drawings inside.

Above you can see some joint stools from his book on that subject along with his own interpretation of the Anarchist’s tool chest based on the recent book by Chris Schwarz. We also talked about the wide variety of profiles that can be created from even a very modest set of molding planes. " There is a great article from Paul Van Pernis in an Early American Industries Association (EAIA) blog, entitled "Stanley's #75 Bull Nose Rabbet Planes from the Model Shop". ; VaultPress Backup and security scanning for your site.
